Have your parents ever warned you not to mix around with that particular kid? That boy your parents tell you to stay away from? And everything your parents don't want you to end up to be like?
I'm that guy.

True story. :D

(WARNING: IT IS CORNY AT TIMES, HEH)

LOVE LIKE ROCKETS

“Get out of my house and never come back!” a woman shouted as she slammed the door shut loudly. He stood at the porch staring at the white, wooden door. He turned, picked up his suitcases and went on his way.

The cool night breeze made the atmosphere soothing as the lights from the street lamps gave away his identity. Carter McKnight waved for a taxi as he adjusted his grip on his suitcases. Taxis were rarely available at night in downtown New York. As busy as it may seem, New York was rather quiet at the suburbs.

Carter gave a sigh after half an hour of waiting and continued walking. His destination was unsure but he knew he needed to find a motel to get a rest. He halted as soon as he spotted a diner across the street. Carter’s tummy was grumbling anyways.

“Hello sir, may I take your order?” a young waitress approached him as soon as Carter sat down.

“Yes, please. One of those waffles will do,” he replied with a smile.

McKnight sat there and looked outside the diner through the window. His mind wandered off.

“Here he is, Carter McKnight!” the host introduced as the curtains withdrew followed by a wild applause by the crowd.

Carter McKnight was a singer and a guitarist who played nightly in a restaurant. But recently, some sponsors wanted to promote him and eventually he had the chance to play in a gig. People loved him and he had his own album.

McKnight sang as he played the guitar. His singing and the rhythm of the guitar coincided perfectly as the song was played and sung.

“Sir, here are the waffles you ordered,” the waitress tapped his shoulder. That gave him a brief shock as he entered reality. He smiled to her.

“You look depressed. May I ask why?” she asked as she sat opposite him.

Carter McKnight gave a sigh and explained to her about the misery he was going through. Tabloids and paparazzi hunting him down, the love of his life threw him out of his own home and the mixed emotions he was going through.

“I don’t know why, but somehow, despite this, I feel there’s something bigger for me, you know?” Carter said and ate his waffle as he admired the waitress. She was fair and had the most beautiful eyes. He glanced at her nametag- Annie.

“Things happen for a reason. Maybe the reason for all these is hidden for now,” she replied looking at Carter’s suitcase which had, “Carter McKnight” written on it and smiled as she stood up and left. McKnight looked on at Annie as she approached another table to get the orders of the people there. Carter knew what she said was true. Everything happens for a reason. He stood up and picked up his bags. Just as he was about to leave, he saw a piece of torn paper which had, “82737843, Call Me If You Need Anything” written on it. He left the diner and gave a smile to Annie. She smiled back.

A bike sped on a puddle and that gave a splash on Carter’s coat. Carter wiped away the dirt but it was still wet. As he was about to continue searching for a motel, he heard a distant call. Someone was calling his name. He turned and saw Annie waving at him.

“Mind walking home with you?” Annie asked as she approached Carter.

“I’m looking for a motel actually. Remember? Got kicked out of the house,” Carter replied. Annie giggled.

“I’ll walk you to the nearest motel then,” Annie said. Carter just smiled.

Both of them walked under the starlit sky as they talk about their lives. Annie was a university student who’s working while waiting for her term to start. She was 3 years younger than McKnight.

“You know, you made me smile today,” Carter looked at Annie as they reached a motel. His eyes were fixed on hers. Annie smiled, got nearer to Carter and gave him a kiss on his cheeks.

“That’s for walking with me to my motel. I’m staying here temporarily,” Annie said as she pointed to the motel room which had “ROOM 1408” on its door.

Annie walked towards her room and gave a final smile to Carter before entering. He entered the motel and checked in.

“’Ere you go sir, yer’ room,” the receptionist informed with his Texan accent as he passed the keys to Carter. Carter entered his motel room and immediately lay down on the bed. He felt so comfortable. He thoughts was playing mind games on him again as this time, he thought off the time he proposed to Kristen, the woman who kicked him out of his own house.

It was romantic. They were at the beach at night looking at the stars. Carter popped the question out of the blue moon and Kristen replied with a “YES!” immediately. But Carter couldn’t stop thinking, “What went wrong?”

He exited his motel room to get a fresh air and saw Annie walking towards the motel lobby. Excitedly, he grabbed his coat and headed to the lobby.“Annie! Where are you heading?” Carter asked her as she turned.

“Oh. I’m just getting some fresh air,” she replied smiling to him. She never stopped smiling. Her smiles made Carter’s heart skipped a beat.

“Erm, I was wondering you see, uhh, do you want to have a drink?” he asked nervously.

“Sure,” Annie replied with giggle.

They walked to a 24 hours seaside open-air food centre. Both grabbed themselves a drink and some supper.

“The way you look at me, it makes me nervous, “Annie exclaimed as she blushed.

“You have the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen Annie,” Carter replied as he held Annie’s hand. Annie blushed more.

They got nearer and as they about to kiss, a shooting star flew by. People started commenting on that beautiful scenery. Both of them looked on at the shooting star. Annie closed her eyes and murmured something. It was a wish. People make wishes when they see a shooting star. McKnight gave it a try.

Out of nowhere, he felt a kiss on his lips. The sensation in him was burning. He never had felt this feeling before and he loved it. After what seems to be an eternity, which was a boon to Carter, they parted. Both were infinity on high and smiles paved way.

“I love you Annie,” McKnight whispered. Call it love at first sight or whatever you wish, but he knew she was the reason he needed to find all along.

Annie got closer to Carter and whispered, “I love you too Carter. You suddenly entered my life and took my breath away.”

He fell in love with a diner girl within a few hours of meeting her. They headed back to their motel as soon as they finished their supper. Hand in hand they walked down the streets. It was 3am in the morning by now. Carter held Annie hands, kneeled down and took out a ring.

“This was the ring my ex-wife threw away after she kicked me out of my house,” Carter gave a brief laugh and continued, “Annie, would you be my love, forever?”

Annie stood there with tears in her eyes. As soon as she wanted to answer, Carter pushed her out of the way as swiftly as possible and an amplified loudness was heard. Annie couldn’t make out that noise. She stood up, bright lights were all she saw and when the debris was cleared, she saw a 16-wheeler crushed at the spot where she and Carter stood.

She paced back and forth at the corridor, waiting for news from the doctors. The light from the “OPERATION IN PROGRESS” signboard went shut. The doctor appeared from behind the operation theatre door with blood on his gloves. The doctor approached Annie, pulled down his mouth-mask and revealed the news…..

“Things happen for a reason. Maybe the reason for all these is hidden for now,”
