Have your parents ever warned you not to mix around with that particular kid? That boy your parents tell you to stay away from? And everything your parents don't want you to end up to be like? I'm that guy.

THE SPOTLESS MIND
March 12th 2008
“Are you sure about this? There’s no turning back now,”
He paused for a moment and looked at the man in the white suit. And on his suit, there was a nametag which had, ‘Dr Alan Harper’ imprinted on it.
“Yeah, I’m sure.” Nick Walter replied as he breathed in.
'THE SPOTLESS MIND'
March 14th 2006
Nick Walter walks down the streets hand-in-hand with a lovely, beautiful lady. Almost reaching his height, she was also slender and slim. Had beautiful hazel eyes and wore a red jacket to match her lips. Mary Jane was her name.
“So, where are you taking me?” she asked, giving him a slight nudge and a smile.
“I’m taking you to a special place. We’re reaching soon,” Nick replied, smiling back.
The special place he mentioned was something extraordinary. It was a cliff, though it does not bear scenery of a blank dark sky but instead a dark sky with bright stars. And just below the brightly lit stars, city lights filled the ground.
“It’s beautiful Nick!” Mary Jane exclaimed. She tilted her head to face Nick and leans closer to him. Nick understood the gesture immediately. He responded by leaning his head towards her and as he was about to kiss her....

“Alright! We’ve erased March 14th, Nick!” Dr Alan exclaimed in excitement. The machine obviously worked on Nick. Nick looked dazed as he woke up from the process.
Walter had enjoyed 2 years of beautiful relationship with Mary Jane until they broke up recently. Devastated and disappointed, he wanted to erase memories of her. Seemed impossible, yes? But luckily for him, a group of scientists-cum-doctors have found a way to erase memories. A machine that plays with your memories- erases it, restores it or creates it.
“Yeah, great work guys. Can we move on?” Nick responded but he knew deep within him, something felt wrong. Not wrong in a criminal way, but emotionally.
March 23rd 2006
Walter walked towards a bench and sat on it. He was looking rather dashing and smart. In his hands was a bouquet of assorted flowers. He was waiting for Mary Jane and soon after, she arrived.
Their date went perfectly well- that’s what Nick thought anyways. A sweet and loving gentleman, he did everything possible to keep Mary Jane within his wraps. He loved her so much. Both of them were in the car, a Mercedes convertible, parked at that same cliff they were at the other night.
“You know, if every day was like this, they’d be the best days of my life.”
“Nick, you’ve made me smile enough. Your best days won’t ever end.”
Nick smiled.
Everything went blank.
March 12th 2008
“Okay, let’s give Nick here a rest,” Dr Alan said to his crew, looked at Nick and continued, “get yourself a drink, I’ve got to tell you something.”
Both Nick Walter and Dr Alan was sitting at a round table, drinking coffee. Dr Alan looked straight into Nick’s eyes.
“I’ve been meaning to tell you this, Nick.”
“What?”
“Your girlfriend- or should I call her your ex now? Well, she came here the other day. Told us she wanted to get rid of HER memories of you.”
Nick went speechless. His eyes widened in disbelief. Was this the feeling he felt earlier on, that something was wrong? He continued to listen.
“She told us after her memories of you were too painful yet loving to keep. She wanted to start anew.”
“It was painful yet loving?”
“Yes. She said those memories of you, it was the best. She loved you more than she loved any other guy she had dated. Now, after telling you this, do you still want to continue?”
Walter never knew why Mary Jane wanted to break-up with him. She left him out of a sudden. No phone calls left, no messages, nothing. She left without a sound.
“I... I don’t know.”
“Take your time, mate.” Dr Alan patted Nick’s back as he stood up and left the coffee table.
“Wait!” Nick exclaimed as Dr Alan stopped in his tracks, “can you give me access to her memories? The ones you’ve erased? Switch them with my memories. I need to know why she left.”
Dr Alan saw the desperation in Nick’s eyes. He too loved Mary Jane as much as Mary Jane loved him.
“... I’ll try.” He replied.
Back at the machine, Dr Alan adjusted everything and started to swap memories of Mary Jane with Walter’s. He began to see Jane’s memories, through her eyes.
November 18th 2007
Mary Jane exited a building. She was coughing badly. There was a ringing tone which came from her handbag. It was her hand phone- it had Nick Walter’s name on it- and he was calling her. She rejected that call and waved for a taxi.
“7th Avenue, downtown, please,” Mary Jane instructed the taxi driver. She was still coughing and covered her mouth with her handkerchief. It had blood stains on it.
March 12th 2008
Nick Walter was struggling in his seat on the machine. He had a confused, dazed expression on him. His eyes were closed though. Was he trying to shake off what he saw through her eyes?
December 16th 2007
A luggage bag filled with clothes was on a queen sized bed. Mary Jane was throwing her clothes in as she packed her stuff. Her house phone rang.
“Yes, I’m coming over. Everything’s okay. I think I’ll stay there for a while, dad.”
She puts down the phone, finishes packing her luggage, took a last glance at her apartment, locked the door and left the building. She waved for a taxi.
“The airport, please.” She said to the taxi driver.
Apparently, Mary Jane is leaving for Houston, back to her parent’s place.
She boarded the plane which was supposed to leave at 7.00pm but as she was walking at the connector, her view was blurry and everything went blank.
March 12th 2008
Nick struggled harder this time and he woke up.
“What happened after that?”
“She left for Houston after she was released from the hospital but not before coming here to get her memory erased.”
Nick stood up and got his coat, “I’m going to Houston. I’ll be back soon, I guess.”
He took the next flight there and went to her parent’s place. He gave 3 knocks on the door as he waited on their front porch. The door opened.
“Hey, is Mary Jane here?” Nick asked.
“Come inside, Nick.” Mary Jane’s dad, Mr Smith, instructed.
Walter hanged his coat and sat on the sofa. Her dad sat on his sofa.
“So, is she here?” Nick looked around the house but it seemed quiet.
“She’s gone, Nick.”
“Gone? Where did she go to?” Nick asked.
“No, you don’t understand. She’s gone, forever, son.” Mr Smith gave a direct blow to Nick Walter.
“What?”
“My only daughter, Mary Jane, died 2 months ago of internal bleeding. Her small heart was pumping out and taking in too much blood.”
Nick looked at him in disbelief. There was two options; either her dad was a terrible joker or it was true. The former worked better for Nick but unfortunately, it was the latter. He bent his head down and cried. In cases like this, men deserved to cry despite their self-proclaim of being macho.
“She wanted me to give you this in case you came looking for her.” Mr Smith handed out a note to Nick. Nick took it as he wiped his tears though the note was a little wet from his tears.
“Dear love, if you’ve gotten this letter, it probably means you know my situation now. I had to leave you. You wouldn’t want a dying girlfriend and wife would you? I know I did leave you without a single word but it was the most rational thing I could think of.
I erased memories of you. Memories eventually fade away, but you’ll always be in my heart, Nick. I love you.”
Nick sobbed as he read his girlfriend’s last letter to him.
Present Day, March 28th 2008
“Are you ready?” Dr Alan asked as he set up his machine.
“Yeah, I’m ready.” Nick replied and smiled.
Mary Jane’s memories and his memories of her are both inserted back into his mind. He may have lost the girl he loved most, but these memories would serve as the sweetest moments in his life. And even though memories fade, these memories would fade along with him as time passes.
